Government UX Summit 2019: Raising the Design Voice in Government

There are many talented, ambitious designers working in government organizations, but too often they are disempowered by a lack of design maturity around them. Data-informed design – the development and use of hard evidence to support design decisions – can be a powerful way to speak to stakeholders in ways they can hear. However, getting started can be daunting. Designers need not just the activities and tools to gather data and evidence, but a roadmap for how to effectively use what they have gathered. No one wants to create unread reports.

GSA’s Office of Strategic Communications (OSC) manages GSA.gov, the GSA intranet (InSite), and other digital initiatives (among other responsibilities). In this session, we will be sharing how we have been using analytics, usability testing, and related research techniques to not just make notable improvements to certain sections, but also to start to improve the prominence of user experience in GSA as a whole. While we will discuss our program overall, we will use the case study to spotlight the successes we have had and how they came about. We will also talk about areas where we still have progress to make and some of the challenges we have been facing.

The session will provide insight into activities, tools, and practical ways to promote the work that attendees will be able to use right away to strengthen their own position as government designers.
