AAMC Releases the Biennial Diversity Facts & Figures Report

The Association of American Medical College has released their 2016 Diversity in Medical Education report. The Facts & Figures Report is part of a series, the second of which has been released in longform digital format. The Diversity in Medical Education report provides data on the race, ethnicity, and gender for the United States for the 2014–2015 academic year.

Tracking toward a Vision

In our second iteration of the digital report, the AAMC and Forum One teams worked together to create a vision for how we would increase the impact of the diversity data and drive the report’s key audiences—students, medical educators and administrators, researchers, policymakers, media, and the general public—to share its findings. The goal was to create an experience that would tell the story of the strides made in medical school diversity and to show the work yet to be done. This meant we had to make the content easy to consume and understand, and the data easy to share.

Telling a Story with Data

With a shared vision in hand, Forum One worked with the AAMC to take the design and story even further than in previous years. Considering how the data would be displayed, how users would navigate through the report, and creating a responsive design were vital in developing the new styles. Working together with the AAMC data team, we created a stunning visual design system that color codes each section and provides corresponding iconography. These elements create increased legibility and bring the diversity data to life.

The site, which is built on WordPress, uses Highcharts Cloud and custom infographics so that the figures and tables are easily printed, downloaded, or shared across social media platforms. These features allow the AAMC to create a clear pathway for sharing the data and extending the influence of its reach.
