U.S. Department of the Interior
Using AI to Guide a Career Path in Government

As a government agency with more than 70,000 employees, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), stewards public lands, increases environmental protections, pursues environmental justice, and honors nation-to-nation relationships with Tribes. Forum One developed an engaging quiz using AI that matches job seekers to opportunities based on their status of federal employment, level of education, job experience, and professional strengths.

Matching job seekers to opportunities

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is striving to improve recruitment, retention, and readiness among its workforce by helping both current government employees and private citizens around the country explore career opportunities within DOI and connect with relevant resources.

Forum One worked closely with DOI to develop and launch an engaging quiz that uses AI to match employees and job seekers to opportunities based on their status of federal employment, level of education, job experience, and professional strengths. Taking it one step further, we are additionally in the process of creating a platform that uses AI to further define one’s job path based on professional course completion.

Using data to advance professional growth

DOI sought to maximize its ability to recruit and retain future-ready talent at all levels, especially subject matter experts, frontline staff in difficult-to-hire roles, and promising future agency leadership. They were interested in using data to enable current and prospective employees to better understand the skills necessary to advance professionally within and across the DOI careers.

Taking a product-based approach

Forum One’s technical team and experts from partners Polydelta provided strategic consulting to determine possible artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) use cases, and develop a product that provided the best return on investment. We guided DOI through strategic exercises to determine clear objectives for the project and map out activities and actions to achieve them.

The Difference in Our Work

Forum One’s technical team and experts from partners Polydelta provided strategic consulting to determine possible artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) use cases and develop a product that provided the best return on investment. We guided DOI through strategic exercises to determine clear objectives for the project and map out activities and actions to achieve them.

Impact

With the development of this product, the Forum One and Polydelta team demonstrated how the agency could leverage ML and data engineering to augment processes across distributed applications.

In this particular instance, AI and ML accelerated the client’s efficiency by a factor of six: Originally, DOI staff developed an 18-month plan to analyze the text of thousands of historic course competencies manually. However, armed with their new tool, staff could complete the same analysis in three months and automate future analyses.
